For sudden symptoms such as weakness on one side, face drooping or slurred speech, call 108 or 112 and go to a hospital first.

What's the difference between a neurologist and a psychiatrist — and why does Dr. Mailan K have both qualifications?

A neurologist treats diseases of the brain, spinal cord and nerves — such as stroke, epilepsy, migraine, Parkinson's disease and neuropathy. A psychiatrist treats conditions of mood, thinking and behaviour — such as depression, anxiety and sleep problems. The two often overlap: low mood is common after a stroke, anxiety can cause dizziness and tingling, and memory problems can have neurological or emotional causes. Dr. Mailan K holds a DNB in Neurology and a DPM in psychiatry, so both sides can be assessed in one consultation.

Emergencies

What should I do if I think someone is having a stroke?

Call 108 or 112 immediately and go to the nearest hospital — do not wait for a clinic appointment. Signs include sudden face drooping, arm or leg weakness, slurred speech, loss of balance or vision. Note the time the symptoms started. Come to the clinic afterwards for recovery care and prevention.

When is a seizure an emergency?

Call 108 or 112 if a seizure lasts more than 5 minutes, if seizures repeat without the person waking in between, if it is a first-ever seizure, if the person is injured or has trouble breathing, or if they do not wake up normally afterwards.

This information is for general awareness and is not a substitute for a consultation. In an emergency, call 108 or 112. Read the full disclaimer.
